Utilitarian Fashion

Tailors and industries are required by the government in order to produce weapons and uniforms for the army. This introduced new technologies rose the production and created the possibility of an industry capable of reproducing clothes.

There was a democratization of Fashion up to an impossible point. This prêt a porter didn't reach everybody but did spread.

The prices of sewing machines decreased and patterns became easy to access, so people were able to get them and make their own clothes.

New use of synthetic textiles.

The Garçon look became inspired by the uniforms of the soldiers and masculinity.
It developed during the II World War and was a consequence of the circumstances of the war situation.

It becomes real in 1940 when there is a rationing of cloths and dyes and designers have to be wittier.

In 1941, the first utilitarian collections are established in Great Britain.

In 1942, measures that adjusted people's outfits were established. Those measures were the consequence of the rationing (reduced number of buttons, no pockets, no vests or suspenders....).

Each home had its own closet with basic clothing.
